Help for depression can be found in many places. The problem is that even after you seek help for your depression, it can often take some time to recover. First, if you see a doctor, he or she may prescribe antidepressants which take up to several weeks to start working. During that time there may be some side effects as your body gets used to the medication. There is a possibility that the prescribed medication may not work for you and then you may have to try something different.

Taking action
Depression is a vicious cycle because when you feel so negative and down you lose confidence and energy and just don’t feel like doing anything at all. This in turn makes you feel helpless and without any direction in life. You need at this point to do something, anything to take a step forward. Push yourself to do something for you. Create a goal for yourself and start to pursue it. Or at least take the first small step. Believe me, doing anything positive at all will make you feel better and give you that bit of hope, but doing nothing and giving in to your depression will make it worse.
When you are depressed it is likely that your goals and plans will get dropped, adding to your stress and worry. Your life and work may suffer as a result. So what to do? Support is very important and talking can really help, that’s why friends are so important. Therapy can be very effective at this point as it forces you to express yourself. If you can feel just a little bit motivated then make a simple goal and lower your expectations. take into account that you are feeling down and try something simple and do not, as many do in this situation, try to do something too ambitious. Small steps will build you up.
Self-care
One of the most important things you need to do if you feel depressed and low on energy and motivation is to take care of yourself. This means looking after your physical and mental needs. Taking a shower or shaving, even if you don’t feel like it, may make a big difference in the way you feel. Others will also respond to you more positively, so this will also help. Whilst your energy is low you also need to be careful about what you eat and also how you are sleeping. Sleep is so important when fighting stress and a good night’s sleep can transform your mood. Read more about the connection between sleep and depression.
Exercise is so important and not only for the body but also for the mind. It actually creates positive chemicals in the brain which make you happier. So even if you don’t feel like going out push yourself to take a walk and get some exercise in the fresh air. The change as well as the physical activity will have a positive effect.
Help yourself by connecting with other people. If you feel very depressed you may want to be alone and some alone time is good. It can also be de-motivating to stay in too much and hide away from people so again push yourself to get out and see someone if you can, don’t mope alone and think the worst. Isolating yourself also deprives you of the support others can offer you.
Depression Prevention
Helping yourself with depression includes staying happy and avoiding the downward spiral into the dark shadows of a world that is very familiar to depressed people.
Providing you have recovered and do not suffer from the more serious forms of clinical depression you can change the way you think and approach life so that you will be happier. If you are happy you cannot become depressed.
Support for depression comes from so many sources including doctors, friends and most importantly yourself. Look out for the warning signs of depression as noted on the symptoms page or test yourself and then try some of the things listed in how to be happy.
